Winter: The Wonder of the Land

Much of our focus this time of year is directed toward snow, Christmas, family, and the festivities surrounding the holidays.  Not much attention is given to the plant kingdom outside of the annual Christmas tree, and house decor, but this season brings many unseen benefits to the organic life that we all enjoy throughout Spring, Summer, and Fall.  The winter season offers much more than cold, snow, and ice.

 Winter Benefits People:

The cold winter months benefit us simply because of the beauty they bring. Every year our homes are transformed into winter wonderlands.  This time of year brings cheer and warmth as families come together to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas. Shorter days mean longer evenings for more quiet and peaceful times for reading, reflection & relationship.

Winter Benefits Established Plants & Trees:

Through this time of year, when deciduous trees have lost their leaves, and the ground is frozen, the established plant life enters "dormancy," a stage similar to the hibernation of many animals. Plant dormancy is vital to their survival.  Many types of fungus, parasites, and insects live off of these organisms, stealing life from them.  By dropping their leaves in the fall, the trees rob the parasites of their source of nutrition.  Although the tree is dormant, its roots continue growing, expanding, and reaching through unfrozen soil.  Additional water and nutrients are then set in reserve to nourish new growth in the spring.

Winter Benefits Soil:

During the winter months, temperatures often fluctuate around the freezing point.  Water in the soil expands when it freezes and contracts when it thaws.  This freeze – thaw cycle helps break down organic material, as well as aerate the ground, improving the quality of soil.

The winter months, though they sometimes become colder, and drearier than we appreciate, provide a huge boost to plant and tree longevity.
